I guess I never quite “grew up.” I love toys, and art, and making things, and especially making them come to life. I’ve always had a fascination with how things move, and loved puzzling out how. Dabbling with mechanized props, cables, and relishing in the joy of physical animation with practical FX has evolved into a deep-seated passion.
Prop-building
Custom Props
I relish in designing and delivering creative pieces that complement the greater whole. I’ll ask a lot of questions about the world so that these unique, one-of-a-kind pieces can blend in organically with the environment and characters, but maintain awe-inspiring potential.
Versatility
Coming from the realm of strict and small budgets, I can often create pieces out of just about anything. Resourcefulness and problem-solving are qualities I’m known for in such creative endeavours, and I’m skilled with sewing, painting, worbla, sculpting, prop armour, prop weapons, soft puppets, models, and mechanical/cable puppets and props.
Reverse Engineering
When I work on a project, the first questions I ask are what is it/what does it look like? and/or what does it need to do? I can design world-specific, truly unique pieces that match the aesthetic of the place/culture in which it exists with durability and performance in mind.
One of the weirdest and wildest joys I get from creating is working backwards from the end goal, and figuring out the steps and materials needed to achieve the desired result. Especially with new and technical designs, there can be a lot of troubleshooting through the discovery in the process, but embracing the challenges unlocks new levels of creativity and problem-solving.
Bringing Objects to Life
There is an incomparable glee in the mechanization of props. Watching a prototype come to life for the first time – especially when it’s as desired – is fuel for the creative fires, inspiring every kind of “what else can I do with this?” kind of question that keeps me striving for better articulation, more precision, whatever the project needs to satisfy the job it needs to do.
I have experience utilizing various pulleys, cables, rods, and springs, and problem-solving to find whatever works with the materials.
